Now introducing... The Adams Challenge! Every month, Mrs. Adams hosts a challenge in the library with the hopes of encouraging students to try new books. Every book that a student reads that fits that month's challenge receives a piece of candy and their name entered into a drawing for a $5.00 gift card. The more books a student reads, the more candy and drawing entries they receive. September's Adams Challenge was to read the first book of a series, and the winner was Brianna Doan!

Dusti Bowling, author of the 2019 One Book, One Community selection Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, was in Olney on Tuesday, April 16th. She presented to all RCMS students, St. Joseph students grades 4-8, select RCHS students, and interested community members. Dusti’s presentation began with her sharing about her personal life such as her family and multiple unique pets, as well as descriptive background knowledge on both the Arizona landscape and animals native to the land. Dusti went on to discuss the book and where the inspiration for the two main characters (Aven and Connor) originated, which turned out to be very close to her heart and based on several of her life experiences. Dusti’s presentation concluded with an overall sense of encouragement, with a quote from the founder of Life Without Limbs, Nick Vujicic: “Don’t give up. And know that there is always someone out there who believes in you and who loves you just the way that you are.”
Other events throughout the day included two question-and-answer sessions with both RCES and RCMS book club students, student book signings, and a community meet-and-greet reception with book signings, which was held after school in the RCMS library. Becca Leslie, teacher-librarian at RCMS, would like to thank RCCU #1, the RCMS principals and faculty, ERFAE, and the Carrie Winter Trust for faithfully supporting this project.

Richland County Middle School is proud to present the 2019 One Book, One Community selection:
Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, by Dusti Bowling!
Richland County Middle School is proud to present the 2019 One Book, One Community selection:
Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, by Dusti Bowling!
This is the second year in a row we have been able to give every student at RCMS their own copy of the book. This year’s selection is a very funny, yet deep read, which pairs well with our current school motto: Be Kind. It is also exciting to note that the sequel to this book (titled Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus) will be released in September, which will allow students and the community to continue their enjoyment of this story and therefore extend the life of the project into the coming school year. The book was chosen not only by Mrs. Leslie, but with the help of her One Book Student committee, which meets during all of first semester and reads from a list of books Leslie pre-selects as good possibilities for the program.
More about the book from the publisher: “Whoa! What happened to your arms?” Aven Green gets that question a lot. She loves to tell people that she lost her arms in an alligator wrestling match, or a wildfire in Tanzania, but the truth is she was born without them. And when her parents take a job running Stagecoach Pass, a rundown western theme park in Arizona, Aven moves with them across the country knowing that she’ll have to answer the question over and over again. Her new life takes an unexpected turn when she bonds with Connor, a classmate who also feels isolated because of his own disability, and they discover a room at Stagecoach Pass that holds bigger secrets than Aven ever could have imagined. It’s hard to solve a mystery, help a friend, and face your worst fears. But Aven’s about to discover she can do it all . . . even without arms.”
As mentioned, every student at RCMS, as well as all faculty and staff, received copies of Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. Additional books are available at RCES, RCMS, RCHS, St. Joseph School, and both the OCC and Olney Public libraries. Finally, over 150 copies have been distributed throughout many businesses and organizations in Richland County.

One Book, One Community programs have been used successfully throughout the United States to foster unity within a community through literature and discussion—by students and adults all reading a common book. The RCMS selections over the years have always featured a novel that has a strong moral underpinning/lesson, relatable characters, and an unforgettable story; this novel is no exception. For all of these reasons, we would like to encourage residents of Richland County to read the book along with us.
On Tuesday, April 16th, Dusti Bowling will be speaking and presenting in the RCHS auditorium at 8: 25, 9:25, and 10:25 to students and any interested community members. In addition, Bowling will meet with a smaller student group in the afternoon who earn special VIP status. Finally, there will also be a meet-and-greet book signing in the RCMS library from 3:15-4:00, open to the public. Having authors visit year after year is a blessing and serves as great motivation for students, especially when so many have read the book!
The One Book, One Community program would not be possible without the continued support of the RCCU school district, as well as generous donations provided through both the Carrie Winter Trust and ERFAE, both providing funds since the program’s start in 2007.

In other library news, students in Mrs. Leslie's makerspace x-block recently completed a stick together collaborative pixel puzzle comprised of 7,040 stickers. Their "masterpiece" is a pixelated version of Vincent Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." It was ready just in time for our February Open House!
Finally, congratulations to our February library contest winners! The winners of the coloring contest were Shelbi Conrad, Jada Petticrew, and Allyson Mitchell (not pictured). The winner of the challenge of the week gift card raffle drawing was Colleen Steber.

Wow, we are already one month into the year 2019! It seems crazy that a month has already gone by; we've had so much going on around here! We are currently gearing up for the annual RCMS Open House, which will be held on Thursday, February 21st from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
In the meantime, take a look at how we wrapped up 2018 and began 2019 here in the RCMS library! Our One Book Student Committee met for "cookies and conversation" to discuss their favorite books from the One Book selection list and to vote for their top pick overall. Time will tell what the One Book, One Community 2019 title turns out to be!
Special congratulations to the December coloring contest winners, Chloe Newton and Danielle Brown, the December challenge of the week gift card raffle drawing winner, Vivi Carey, the January coloring contest winners, Maddie Piercefield and Lillyan Strong, and the January challenge of the week gift card raffle drawing winner, Lillian Simpson.

It is hard to believe the Holidays are upon us! Time is flying by, and we are gearing up to be festive and merry!
Recently, I was able to attend the annual AISLE library conference, where I learned many new things and heard some amazing authors and library voices speak, including Ellen Oh, Jennifer Nielsen (our very own 2018 Caudill award winning author), artistic director of Young Chicago Authors Kevin Coval, and Scholastic's Ambassador of School Libraries, John Schu!
Also, enjoy photos of a few of the fun things we've been doing in the library and in the 5th block after school program. There is never a dull moment! Special congratulations to the October coloring contest winners Alyia Moore, Karolyn Waters, Mariah Livingston, and Addie Easton, the October challenge of the week gift card raffle drawing winner, Cali Wingert, and the November/Thanksgiving coloring contest winners Savannah Ferguson and Alyia Moore!
