With only three weeks to go until the end of the 2015-2016 school year, things have been very hectic around here! The library will close to students on Friday, May 6th, when all books/fines are due. After that, we will begin preparing for the next school year; we already have many of the 2017 Caudill books, largely in part due to the successful Book Fair we recently held here in the RCMS library. Thank you so much to everyone who made purchases and/or visited during family night. Once again, our Book Fair was a tremendous success, allowing us to purchase books for the LA classrooms as well as the library.

**We are not done with exciting things, though! Our Battle of the Books bracket has been going on for several weeks. We are down to our final 2 student teams, Fun in Books and Fantastic 5-ish, who will face-off against each other and the 2 teacher teams at the Battle of the Books Final 4 assembly on May 4th! We can't wait!

The whirlwind of excitement surrounding One Book, One Community 2016 and Trent Reedy's visit is all now a fond memory. Mr. Reedy visited and presented on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. His presentation focused on his personal experiences that ultimately led him to become a writer, which he called "the second best job in the world." (When asked, he told students he believed the ultimate best job in the world would be working for the Lego company, as long as you had shoes, of course!)
Reedy revealed that he wanted to be as honest as possible about his war experience in Afghanistan, where he served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 2004-2005. While many of his stories were heartbreaking, Reedy left everyone with a sense of hope as he recalled the importance of helping others in need, as well as being careful not to judge an entire nation based on the actions of one faction.
Other events throughout the day included classroom Q&A sessions, a VIP session for book club students, and a community book signing and reception after school in the RCMS library. All in all, it was a simply fantastic day! As always, a huge thanks to RCCU #1, ERFAE, and the Carrie Winter Trust for providing funds to help make this event possible.

Today is the last meeting of the If You're Reading This book club. Students, along with myself and the Olney Public Library staff, have been meeting weekly at the Olney Public Library to discuss the 2016 One Book. The RCMS 5th block after school program has also provided transportation to these meetings for 5th block participants. In addition, any student that attends two book club meetings will earn the privilege of attending the VIP one-on-one session with Mr. Reedy on the author visit day March 22nd! These meetings have been full of fun and great discussions; what great students we have!

Have you listened to the WSEI Freedom 92.9 radio station lately? If so, you may have heard our One Book, One Community public service announcement! Two eight grade students, Becky Robertson and Langston Richardson, were selected to star in the PSA. They were members of the One Book, One Community student committee this year. For all of first semester, this committee met every other day in the library. During this time they read, rated, and discussed any of the fourteen books from the list of pre-selected books that were possible options for the 2016 One Book selection. Langston and Becky were the only two students on the committee to read all fourteen books! Of course, they both highly recommended If You're Reading This to be chosen as the One Book selection for 2016. Here are a few pictures from the fun time we had at the radio station recording the PSA!

This has been one crazy, fun week here in the RCMS library--it was the One Book, One Community title release week! Each day, students watched video clues to give them hints about the title. Finally, the title was revealed to students via book trailer, announcing the 2016 One Book, One Community selection, If You're Reading This, by highly acclaimed author Trent Reedy. Over half of the students then received their own free copies of the book, kicking off the program's 10th anniversary! Photos taken of this fun day are coming soon, but for now, enjoy the video clues from the week!

LIBRARY CONTEST:
We are holding our 2nd ANNUAL "Give our Snowman a Name" library contest! Everyone who enters this contest will automatically get a peppermint candy. The goal is to come up with the most fun, fabulous name for our library friend. (Last year's chosen name was Mr. Winter Wonder.)
The person with the winning name, chosen by the library staff, will receive a peppermint scented bookmark, a smencil, and a free book!
Also, we will have a random drawing from the remaining entries not chosen as the winner: those students drawn will also receive a peppermint scented bookmark. We are looking forward to all of the creative names that will help us spread some cheer during the holiday season!
READING PROMOTION:
The Polar Express is Mr. Winter Wonder's favorite book.
It is resting safely beneath his feet.
If you decide to take a look*,
the library ladies will give you a sweet candy treat!
(*Must read the book while in the library and pass the AR test. When you show the library ladies your AR score, you will receive a piece of candy of your choice.)
See the bulletin board in the hallway by the library or the fliers posted in the library for more information! HAPPY READING AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Coming up on Friday this week at RCMS, students will dress up in costume as part of Student Leadership Council's participation in Trick or Treat for UNICEF. This has been a favorite event of both teachers and students alike in recent years. We always look forward to seeing all of the costumes, as well as the anticipation of which costumes will be chosen as the winners in the categories of funniest, creepiest, most creative, and best group.
Ironically, this event also goes extremely well with our building theme this year--"Be Someone's Hero"--, inspired by our very own 2015 One Book, One Community One for the Murphys! Perhaps you will enjoy watching Kid President's interview with Tom Hanks, entitled "How to Be a Hero."

The library has been a busy place this month! The 5th Block after school program is well underway, which has resulted in the library being open extended hours! Students may come to read, work, or checkout books on Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 4:00. (On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students may come to read or work but the circulation desk is closed.)
Also, the end of first quarter is nearing and students are visiting the library even more frequently to be sure they have enough AR points to meet their goal. In a "Notes from the Library" email to the students, I encouraged them with these words: Do you need AR points? Do you like candy and other rewards? Several of the titles on the Caudill list this year are excellent quick reads, written in verse, and worth 2-3 points! They are: Mountain Dog by Margarita Engle (3 points), May B by Caroline Rose Starr (2 points), and
Hidden by Helen Frost (3 points). I really enjoyed all of these books! If you read all 3 of them, you will have: 8 AR points, 3 pieces of candy, a scented bookmark, and be able to get out of class and attend the Battle of the Books assembly this Spring! What's not to like?!?
Hopefully several of the students will take me up on the offer! Until next time, happy harvest and happy reading!

School is well underway, and the RCMS library is a busy place! We have cataloged and shelved over 120 new books! All Language Arts classes have visited and checked out books, and the 6th grade classes had library orientation. The One Book, One Community student committee is meeting and reading to pick this year's book. Finally, the new 2015-2016 Caudill books are on the shelves for check-out, and many students have already began reading for rewards! All in all, the perfect book is just waiting for the right hands to grab it here at the RCMS library.
